Craigslist Gigs: the bad, the weird, and the cheapskates

Mow the lawn for free?

Craigslist is obviously a great resource for… well, just about anything. It has even become a really reliable place to find job listings. Of course, the best place to look is the “job” section, but there are actually a lot of gems to be found in the “gigs” list. Don’t get me wrong. You’re not going to find your next million there, but you might find a good odd job or two for a little extra spending money.

At the very least, you’ll get a good laugh.

The top three funniest things about Craigslist “gigs”:

1.) People with really strange requests

There are a lot of really sketchy ads looking for all sorts of “models” and “actors,” and there are an exceptionally large number of drummerless bands and bandless drummers out there. But those aren’t the strange requests I’m talking about.

These are. (My commentary in italics.)

“Persian care”  (cats, that is) “Some birthing and newborn care on occasion. Possibility for live in position.” (Payment offered: $10/hour)

“Need help moving things which you can keep if you want” (Payment offered: stuff)

“Have heating oil sludge I need recycled” (Payment offered: “Let me know how much you will charge me.” Well, since you asked… how about a lot?)

“TAKE DOWN TREES YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE FIREWOOD” (Payment offered: wood)

“Need to grind up turkey” (For the dog, bones and all, good source of calcium!)

“Need Vladimir Putin look-alike” (Payment offered: negotiable depending on resemblance)

“Wear House Costume, for OPEN HOUSE” (Can I wear my Putin costume instead?)

“WOOD REMOVAL!!!!!!!!!” (Only really excited woodchucks need apply)

“Taxidermy a pet rat” “P.S. She is still alive, I’m just planning ahead.”

2.) People with really strange requests who want to pay nothing

$10 per hour must sound like a really nice round number, because that’s the going rate for just about any strange job that ought to be worth more. Someone was actually looking for a caregiver for his or her 90-year-old mother. She needs to be cooked for, fed, changed… washed! Did I mention she only speaks French? Ten bucks.

Don’t get me started on all the posts looking for experienced, specialized, free help. I’ll let other people complain about that. Which brings me to…

3.) People who write angry response posts to the people with really strange requests who want to pay nothing.

Some of my favorites:

“DON’T WORK FOR FREE!!!”
“Where do these idiots come from?”
“Some people just deserve to get punched in the face.”
“Go find a job you troll.”
“You are a complete knucklehead.”
“Shoot for free!? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
